      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can print simple motifs to create patterns.

      Key learning points

      1. Repeating motifs creates patterns.
      2. Ink and rollers can be used to create prints using vegetables.
      3. Digital prints can be created by copying and pasting an image to create repeated patterns.

      Keywords

      • Pattern - a repeated arrangement of shapes, colours, lines or motifs

      • Motif - a recurring theme, idea, symbol, or pattern in a work of art

      • Print - a design made by pressing ink or paint onto paper

      Common misconception

Patterns can only be made with shapes and lines.

Remind children that shapes and lines can be used to make patterns, but motifs can be used to create more complex patterns.

      Teacher tip

Encourage children to explore and discuss the patterns and motifs they can make with a wide variety of vegetables. Small group work on large trays with a single ink colour may be helpful when planning this lesson in order to mange materials.

      Equipment

A variety of vegetables, printing ink or ready mixed paint, printing rollers, printing trays, large outdoor trays, loose paper.
