Use criteria to develop a blog
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can create a microblog post and use a rubric to assess the quality of my blog post.
Key learning points
- Microblogs are short-form blogs used for brief, frequent updates.
- Assessment rubrics provide clear criteria for evaluating blog post quality.
Keywords
Microblog - a type of short-form content on social media platforms, typically consisting of brief posts, often with links, images or hashtags to engage the audience
Rubric - a guide that outlines criteria and levels of achievement to evaluate work fairly and consistently
Common misconception
A rubric is just a checklist for the teacher. It doesn't help me write better blogs.
It's a guide to help you understand what makes a good blog post. It shows you the specific criteria, like clear writing or effective use of images, so you know what to focus on. Use it as a tool to improve your writing before submitting your work.
Teacher tip
Ask the students to use a rubric to assess example blog posts (good and bad). Then, ask them to explain how they used the rubric, and what specific feedback they would give to the creator.
Equipment
Pupils will need access to a device that is connected to the internet and has software that allows them to create a blog.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
