Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can select appropriate images whilst ensuring I comply with copyright and licensing restrictions.

Key learning points

  1. Images should be selected appropriately for their context.
  2. Copyright law and Creative Commons licences govern the use of online content

Keywords

  • Copyright - The right given to the creator of a piece of work to control how it can be used.

  • Licensing - The legal permission to use software, images, music, or other digital content. A license sets out the rules for how something can be used, shared, or modified.

Common misconception

If I find an image online, I can use it however I want, as long as I don't say I created it.

Just finding an image online doesn't automatically mean you can use it freely. Think of it like this: someone created that image, and they have rights to it, just like an author has rights to their book.

Teacher tip

Provide students with links to different websites with images. Have the students identify the copyright or Creative Commons license associated with each image and explain what they are allowed and not allowed to do with it.
