Why this why now
This unit introduces pupils to the world of databases and SQL. Pupils will have worked with datasets in KS3 but will not have experienced data management systems. Pupils will explore the key terms used in a database and learn why relational databases are used to eliminate the redundancy and inconsistencies that can occur in a flat file database. Pupils will explore increasingly challenging SQL commands where they retrieve, update, and delete data in a relational database. To conclude the unit pupils will investigate the legal, ethical and environmental impacts of data and data systems.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils can describe how data is stored in a computer system
- Pupils can recognise what affects use of resources in a computer system when processing data
- Pupils have experience in categorising data based on common features
