      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

      I can make simple sushi.

      Key learning points

      1. Sushi is associated with Japan, but has origins in Southeast Asia. It is traditionally made with rice and raw fish.
      2. Recipes can be inspired by foods and dishes from around the world.
      3. The food skills to make simple sushi are spreading, grating, slicing and rolling.
      4. A dish can be evaluated by its look, smell and taste.

      Keywords

      • Japan - a country in East Asia

      • Sushi - a traditional Japanese dish made with rice

      Common misconception

      All sushi includes raw fish.

Although raw fish is a common ingredient, not all sushi includes fish. Other ingredients are used, such as vegetables, fruit, egg, and cooked fish and meat.

      Teacher tip

Using rice gives pupils a more authentic experience to make sushi. If time and budget allows, use seaweed sheets too. If budget is limited, or rice cannot be cooked, use slices of bread instead of rice to make 'sushi sandwiches'.
