      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can sort foods into plants and animals.

      Key learning points

      1. All food comes from plants or animals.
      2. Food can be sorted into plants or animals.
      3. The food we eat comes from plants and/or animals.

      Keywords

      • Plants - a living thing that grows in the ground or water, such as fruit and vegetables

      • Animals - a living thing that can eat and move, such as a chicken or a dairy cow

      Common misconception

There is a misunderstanding about the origin of food, and lack of awareness of where food comes from.

All food we eat comes from plants and animals. Food from plants includes fruit and vegetables. Food from animals includes milk, eggs, fish and meat.

      Teacher tip

Place some food (or food images) into a bag, then allow pupils (one at a time) to pick a food at random. Ask them whether it is from a plant or animal. Include some foods that contain both, such as a pizza or sandwich. Pupils can also draw their lunch and label the food from plants and animals.
