Plan manufacture using orthographic projection: textiles

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can prepare an orthographic projection of my design.

      Key learning points

      1. Orthographic projections are used to communicate designs accurately.
      2. Orthographic projections are to scale, show multiple views and the dimensions of the design.
      3. Orthographic projections can be used to inform manufacturing.

      Keywords

      • Orthographic - represents a 3D object in 2D, where views are projected from the object's surfaces

      • 3rd angle - a type of orthographic drawing

      • Construction lines - guidelines used in drawings

      • Dimensions - numerical values that specify the size

      • Scale - a ratio of full size

      Common misconception

Orthographic projections are completed after manufacture.

Orthographic projections are known as a working drawing. These are sent from a designer to a manufacturer before manufacturing to enable them to manufacture the product or component.

      Teacher tip

Being able to live model the steps involved in creating an orthographic projection will be highly benefical. Use simple building blocks with the view names written on each face to learn the beginning steps. Use squared paper and shapes with straight lines to teach students the fundamentals.

      Equipment

Squared and plain paper, rulers, pencils, computers, CAD software.
