Generating vocabulary to describe the setting of the story ‘Lucky Dip'

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can generate vocabulary to describe the setting of the story ‘Lucky Dip’.

      Key learning points

      1. A setting is where the story takes place.
      2. Two adjectives describing a noun is called an expanded noun phrase.
      3. A comma should be used to separate adjectives in an expanded noun phrase.
      4. We can use our senses to describe a setting.

      Keywords

      • Vocabulary - the words a writer uses

      • Expanded noun phrase - a group of words with no verb that adds detail to a noun

      • Setting - where the story takes place

      • Senses - the physical abilities of sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste

      Common misconception

Pupils may describe the setting solely based on what can be seen.

Teach pupils to use more than just one of their senses to create a more detailed description. Provide additional support e.g. playing beach sounds, bringing in sand for children to feel.

      Teacher tip

You may wish to bring in objects to help pupils who have never been to the seaside before. For example, sand, shells, fish and chips, doughnuts etc.

      Equipment

You need access to the 2001 animation ‘Lucky Dip’ by Emily Skinner for this lesson.
