      Rich vocabulary associated with running

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can effectively use the words 'hurtle', 'scamper' and other rich vocabulary associated with running.

      Key learning points

      1. 'Hurtle' is a verb which means to rush or move very quickly.
      2. 'Scamper' is a verb which means to scurry or dash.
      3. 'Charge', 'dart', 'dash' and 'scurry' are other verbs related to running.

      Keywords

      • Noun - a naming word for people, places or things

      • Verb - a being, doing or having word

      • Synonym - a word that has the same or similar meaning to another word

      • Word pair - words that often appear together

      Common misconception

As most of these words have a similar meaning, pupils answers may vary in Task C, question 9.

Explain to pupils that there is more than one option that can work in each sentence. The word maps from previous tasks might help them to find the best answers.

      Teacher tip

Start the lesson by showing pupils short clips of different things running. For example, a person sprinting in a race, a mouse running across the floor, a tiger running after its prey. Ask the pupils how they might describe the action, using any other word than 'running'.
