Rich vocabulary associated with walking
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can effectively use the words 'meandering', 'skulk' and other rich vocabulary associated with walking.
Key learning points
- 'Meandering' is an adjective which means wandering or following a bendy path.
- 'Skulk' is a verb, which means to creep or prowl.
- 'Trudge', 'swagger', 'traverse' and 'stagger' are other verbs related to walking.
Keywords
Adjective - a word that describes a noun
Verb - a being, doing or having word
Synonym - a word that has the same or similar meaning to another word
Word pair - words that often appear together
Common misconception
Pupils might use the verb 'meander' instead of the adjective 'meandering' in their sentence.
Explain to pupils that 'meander' is a useful verb to use, but be clear that it is different to the adjective 'meandering' which is used to describe a noun and not as an action.
Teacher tip
You could start this lesson by providing pupils with 5 different sentences which all used the word 'walked' - even though the scenarios are very different. For example, one sentence might be about someone walking reluctantly and another walking eagerly. Can they come up with synonyms of 'walked'?
