This unit uses and builds on previously taught vocabulary in narrative writing and reading units throughout KS1, for example in the Year 2 unit ''Lucky Dip': narrative writing'. For the first time, pupils learn a range of ambitious vocabulary at word-level in discrete lessons, focusing here on building vocabulary to describe characters, including big, beautiful and eye words. This unit prepares pupils for learning a wider range of vocabulary to describe characters in narrative writing, including small, confident and shy words, in the Year 3 unit 'Character: small, confident and shy words'.

      Prior knowledge requirements

      • Using precise vocabulary helps to write more effectively for a particular purpose.
      • A synonym is a word with the same or similar meaning.
      • A noun is a person, place or thing.
