Preparing to write poetry inspired by rain

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can prepare to write a poem about the rain.

      Key learning points

      1. A pantoum is a form of poetry, originating in Malaysia; they are characterised by their repeating lines.
      2. The second and fourth lines of one verse are included as the first and third lines of the next verse.
      3. Repeated lines in pantoums can gain new context and meaning as they are combined within different verses.
      4. The first and third lines of the first verse are mirrored in the final verse in the second and fourth lines.
      5. Pupils can make specific language choices to describe the intensity of the rain.

      Keywords

      • Form - the way that a poem can be presented

      • Pantoum - a form of poetry that uses repetition to create musical effect

      Common misconception

Pupils may be unsure of some of the definitions and synonyms of words associated with rain.

Dictionaries, thesauruses and rhyming dictionaries would support pupils when completing Task B.

      Teacher tip

It would be beneficial to have completed the Y4 Mrs Wordsmith vocabulary unit on 'Weather: cloudy, dark and rainy words' ahead of this lesson, to support children with generating vocabulary. It may be beneficial to print a physical copy of the poem in Task A.
