Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can summarise and explain key information about rivers.

Key learning points

  1. The information learnt depends on which sections of the text the reader has focused on.
  2. Summarising a topic and discussing it with others deepens understanding and helps knowledge to stick.
  3. Rivers are home to many living things and they are a crucial part of human life.
  4. Human activities can cause harm to rivers.
  5. There are ways that humans can protect rivers for the benefit of all living things.

Keywords

  • Summarise - to pull out the key information and ideas from the text

  • Pollute - to contaminate something with harmful or poisonous substances

  • Protect - to keep something safe from harm

Common misconception

Children may think that pollution of rivers only affects the animals and plants that inhabit it.

Model examples of how food chains are broken for other animals and humans if living things in rivers are destroyed.

Teacher tip

Explore sections of the book that haven't already been covered prior to the lesson if possible to support children's ability to summarise.
