More rich vocabulary associated with smell

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can effectively use the words 'reek', 'stench' and other rich vocabulary associated with smell.

      Key learning points

      1. 'Reek' is a verb which means stink or smell.
      2. 'Stench' is a noun which means odour or stink.
      3. 'Whiff', 'scent', 'fragrance' and 'odour' are other nouns related to smell.

      Keywords

      • Noun - a naming word for people, places or things

      • Verb - a being, a doing or a having word

      • Synonym - a word that has the same or similar meaning to another word

      • Word pair - words that often appear together

      Common misconception

Pupils might find the word classes difficult for these words. For example, they might think 'fragrance' is an adjective, confusing it with the word 'fragrant', or that 'reek' is an adjective.

Encourage pupils to look at the word pairs to help to understand that most of these words are nouns. This is because the word pairs are adjectives.

      Teacher tip

You could take the 5 nouns 'stench', 'scent', 'odour', 'fragrance' and 'whiff' and ask the pupils to order them from most negative to positive to help them in understanding when to use each one.
