Why this why now

This unit uses and builds on pupils' understanding of characterisation and themes, which were explored in 'Swallow's Kiss'. In this unit, pupils will deepen their understanding of the range of ways characters and themes can be conveyed. Pupils will share take-away ideas and develop their confidence in making connections and recommendations to enhance the reading experience and broaden their understanding of literature. This unit prepares pupils for 'El Deafo: book club', where they will explore a graphic novel text and develop their understanding of plot in another form.

  • Have read or listened to 'Varjak Paw'
  • Ability to listen to and respond to other people's ideas, thoughts and opinions.
  • Some pleasure, motivation and interest in books.
