Why this why now

This unit uses and builds on pupils' initial understanding of the novella's characters, themes and settings from 'Jekyll and Hyde: the divided city'. They now start to question their initial reading of the novella and develop alternative interpretations of what they are reading. In particular, they develop tentative and nuanced interpretations of the novella's setting and motifs. This prepares pupils for their next deep dive exploration, 'Society as the villain', where they further explore the role of the Gothic in the novella, and question the characters' roles within the narrative.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know the plot of the novella.
  • Pupils know the main characters in the novella and their role in the plot.
  • Pupils have an understanding of the main themes of the novella.
  • Pupils can structure arguments clearly, using thesis statements, topic sentences and single paragraph outlines.
  • Pupils have memorised a number of key quotations from the novella.
  • Pupils can identify the main motifs of the novella: light and dark and silence.
  • Pupils know the historical and social context of the novella.
  • Pupils can select a variety of quotations as evidence to support their analysis.
  • Pupils use comparative language to compare characters' actions.
  • Pupils can use phrases such as 'more specifically' and 'more precisely' to add detail to their inferences.
