Why this why now
This unit uses and builds on pupils' understanding of 'An Inspector Calls' from the previous deep dive units by getting pupils to now think much more carefully about how Priestly uses form to present his ideas. Pupils enrich their understanding of the play by linking the use of form to Priestly's ideas, and this enables them to create rounded, nuanced and rich interpretations of the play.

‘An Inspector Calls’: Priestley’s theatrical strategy; politics, genre, and form
In this unit, pupils look at how Priestly uses dramatic forms to present his ideas. They look at naturalism and expressionism, before thinking about how the play fits with Brechtian theatre and the morality play tradition. They finally write about how Priestly uses form to present his ideas.
