Conceptualising and exploring the Edexcel Belonging anthology

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can conceptualise and explore the ideas of belonging within the Edexcel Belonging anthology.

      Key learning points

      1. A poetry anthology is chosen with overall themes and ‘big ideas’ in mind.
      2. We might conceptualise belonging as meaning ideas of family, place, positivity and connection.
      3. Arguably, the anthology is just as much about not belonging as it is about belonging.
      4. Exploring ideas of not belonging are just as important as arguably they reflect the realities of society.

      Keywords

      • Belonging - a feeling of being happy or comfortable as part of a particular group

      • Anthology - a collection of artistic works that have a similar form or subject

      • Themes - a universal idea, lesson or message explored throughout a work of literature

      • Connection - something that joins or connects two or more things

      • Representation - something (such as a picture or symbol) that stands for something else

      Common misconception

That an anthology only explores the title theme.

An anthology could also explore the inverse of the title theme in order to highlight particular ideas or concepts.

      Teacher tip

It would be useful to have pupils share which poem they find the most powerful in order to see how different people respond differently.

      Equipment

You will need access to a copy of the Edexcel Belonging anthology for this lesson.
