Why this why now
This unit continues the focus on the imperfect tense, broadening its use to new contexts and incorporating irregular verbs alongside regular verbs. Pupils learn to talk about changes in their town over time, contrasting past and present, before moving on to compare life in different countries. Pupils are exposed to a range of listening activities and reading texts to widen their vocabulary and their cultural knowledge. They learn to describe photos in detail, which is a vital skill for examination at KS4, and to write longer descriptive texts.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils know how to form the imperfect tense of regular verbs in all persons.
- Pupils know that the imperfect tense can be used to translate what we 'used to' do.
- Pupils know that the imperfect can be used to describe what we 'were doing' when something else happened.
- Pupils can recognise the imperfect tense of être, avoir and faire in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd person singular.
- Pupils know the emphatic pronouns moi and toi.
- Pupils know the prepositions sans, pour and avant.
