Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Comparative and superlative adjectives can be used to enhance opinions and descriptions.
      2. It is important to consider word order when translating texts containing superlatives.
      3. Carefully planning, rehearsing and immediately repeating a speaking task helps to improve performance.
      4. Creating a checklist for range of language and another for accuracy can enhance the quality of extended writing.

      Keywords

      • Comparative - a form of adjective or adverb used to compare people, things or ideas

      • Superlative - a form of adjective or adverb used to express the highest degree of a quality, e.g., the tallest, the most interesting

      • Word order - the sequencing of words in a sentence in accordance with grammatical rules

      Common misconception

Superlative sentences have the same word order in English and French.

Take care when writing or translating superlative sentences as the French word order differs quite significantly from English, e.g., 'the most interesting lesson' > 'the lesson the most interesting'.

      Teacher tip

For the speaking task in the second learning cycle, it would be beneficial if students have more than one opportunity to repeat the task, if time permits.
