The location of Africa and UK connections

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can locate Africa and the UK on a map and describe the location of some African countries and ways to travel there.

      Key learning points

      1. Africa is a very large continent with different climates, countries and landscapes.
      2. The compass directions north, south, west and east can be used to describe the location of places in Africa.
      3. We can take different routes and types of transport to get to Tanzania from the UK.

      Keywords

      • Continent - A continent is a large land mass on Earth and there are seven: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania.

      • Transport - Transport is a way of travelling between places and methods of transport include cars, buses, trains, bicycles and aeroplanes.

      • Route - A route shows the starting point and end point of a journey, sometimes with stops in between.

      • Ocean - An ocean is a very big area of salt water between the continents.

      Common misconception

That Africa is a country not a geographically diverse continent.

Recap the names of the seven continents and five oceans. Spend more time using a map to identify different countries in Africa.

      Teacher tip

Learners could go online to investigate possible routes between the UK and Tanzania in more detail, including the types of transport that could be used.
