The forests of the world
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can explain why forests are important and describe the global distribution of different types of forest.
Key learning points
- Forests have a range of important functions and benefits.
- There are different types of forest across the world, e.g. tropical rainforests, boreal forests and temperate forests.
- Different types of forests are located in specific parts of the world.
Keywords
Forest - a large area full of trees
Habitat - the natural home or environment of an animal, plant or other organism
Global warming - the increase in Earth's average temperature over a long period of time
Biome - a large region of the world with places that have similar climates, vegetation and animals that have adapted to living there
Climate - an average of weather conditions (e.g. rain, sun, wind) in a place, taken over a long period of time (usually 30 years or more)
Common misconception
All forests are the same.
Different forests have unique characteristics and ecosystems. The boreal forest, for example, is characterised by its cold climate and coniferous trees.
Teacher tip
A nice way to help students understand biome locations is to describe how the vegetation would change if you walked north from the equator.
