Impacts of migration on the UK's population

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can assess the impact migration has had on the UK's population.

      Key learning points

      1. National migration has altered the population geography of the UK (numbers, distribution, age structure).
      2. International migration has altered the population geography of the UK (numbers, distribution, age structure).
      3. UK and EU immigration policy has contributed to increasing ethnic and cultural diversity.

      Keywords

      • Immigration - the act of moving into a new host location

      • Emigration - the act of moving out of a source location

      • Asylum seeker - someone who seeks permanent or temporary protection in another country from the persecution or danger they experience in their home country

      • Refugee - someone who has successfully sought asylum in another country and is henceforth protected by international law

      Common misconception

Immigrants, asylum seekers and refugees are all the same thing.

The three terms are often confused and misused. All asylum seekers are immigrants but not all immigrants are asylum seekers. Some people seeking asylum may be granted refugee status while others may not.

      Teacher tip

The topic of migration is a great opportunity for students to practise interview and active learning skills by talking to an international migrant about their migration story.
