Why this why now
Pupils can build on their previous knowledge of the UK's physical geography by studying river processes and landforms. Teaching this unit provides pupils with a template to studying physical environments by considering processes, landforms and management. This enables comparison to be made with coasts in the next unit. Knowledge gained will also support the fieldwork unit.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils have a basic understanding of river processes and landforms from KS3
- Pupils understand the principles of erosion, transportation and deposition
- Pupils have an understanding of landscape
- Pupils can use OS maps to describe, analyse and infer
- Pupils can use aerial and ground photos in association with OS maps
- Pupils are familiar with and can interpret cross sections
- Pupils can draw and interpret a line graph, using values on two axes
- Pupils have an understanding of the need for river management
- Pupils understand the issues associated with flooding and why it is considered a hazard

River landscapes
This unit teaches pupils about river processes and landforms. Pupils will learn about the physical processes operating in rivers and about the formation of distinctive landforms of river erosion and deposition. Pupils will also learn about the importance and options of river management.
