Rules of a game: modal verbs, 'jeder', 'jede', 'jedes', dictogloss skills

Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can use strong verbs, modal verbs and 'jed-' when explaining the rules of a game, and complete a dictogloss task to reinforce my understanding and use of language.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

Key learning points

  1. A strong verb has a vowel change in the verb stem of the 2nd and 3rd person singular forms.
  2. Modal verbs (e.g., 'können') are used with an infinitive, which is placed at the end of the sentence.
  3. 'Jed-' means 'every'. Use the same ending as the definite article if the noun is the subject: ‘jeder', 'jede', 'jedes’.
  4. When a masculine noun is the object in the sentence, use 'jeden'. The feminine and neuter forms remain unchanged.
  5. Dictogloss tasks help you practise language through summarising and reproducing language you have read or heard.

Keywords

  • Strong verb - a verb which changes its vowel in the verb stem of some of its forms

  • Modal verb - verb of necessity or possibility (must, can, want) used with a 2nd verb in the infinitive, which goes to the end

  • Jed- - determiner meaning 'every'

Common misconception

Strong verbs have a vowel change in all parts of the verb.

Strong verbs have a vowel change in the 2nd and 3rd person singular forms of the verb only (e.g., 'ich werfe', 'du wirfst', 'sie wirft').

Teacher tip

Students could extend their practice by writing rules for a familiar game, such as 'Happy Families' or 'Snap'.
