Key learning points

  1. It is helpful to categorise vocabulary by theme when revisiting large numbers of words.
  2. Form a closed question by swapping the position of the verb and subject. Add a question word for an open question.
  3. In questions with reflexive verbs, only subject and verb swap position, and the reflexive pronoun follows the subject.
  4. Modal (2-verb) questions swap the subject and 1st verb; the infinitive remains at the end.
  5. When describing a photo, use the acronym PALM. It stands for People, Action, Location, Mood. Add your own opinions too.

Keywords

  • Closed question - a question which can be answered with 'yes' or 'no'

  • Open question - a question which starts with a question word such as ‘Wo?’ and seeks information

  • Reflexive - describes an action where the subject and object of the verb are the same

  • Modal verb - verb of necessity or possibility used with a 2nd verb in infinitive, e.g., 'must', 'can', 'want'

Common misconception

Closed questions in German require a translation of ‘do you …’ or ‘are you …’, as in English.

Swap the position of the verb and the subject to create a closed question in German. Do not use translations of ‘do you …’ or ‘are you …’.
