Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons
Key learning points
- We use ordinal numbers (e.g., 'first', 'second', 'third') for calendar dates.
- To form ordinal numbers 1-19 add '-te', e.g., 'fünfte'; for ordinals 20 and over add '-ste', e.g., 'einundzwanzigste'.
- For 'on the' with dates', use 'am' and add '-n' to the ordinal number, e.g., 'am zweiten März'.
- For years, separate the digits into two pairs, for century and year, and place 'hundert' or 'tausend' between the pairs.
- To infer the meaning of unknown words, examine the surrounding words, review given definitions and select the best fit.
Keywords
Ordinal number - tells you the order of something, e.g., 'first', 'second', 'third', and is used with dates
Am - preposition meaning 'on the', is a contraction of 'an' and the dative definite article 'dem'
Common misconception
Saying or writing years in German is the same as in English, e.g., 1066 is 'zehn sechsundsechzig'.
Block the numbers in pairs as in English, but in German you must use 'hundert' or 'tausend'. 1066 is 'zehnhundertsechsundsechszig'. 2025 is 'zweitausendfünfundzwanzig'.
Teacher tip
The planning of a European trip task in Learning Cycle 3 focuses on speaking about a planned or ideal trip in the present and/or future tense. The task could also be adapted for use in the past tense, and/or tackled first as a writing task with partners then reading aloud and checking their answers.
