Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Relative clauses add information about the noun in the main clause, without starting another sentence.
      2. A relative clause starts with a relative pronoun - the definite article ('der', 'die', 'das') that matches the noun.
      3. Question words such as ‘wo’ can also be used as pronouns in relative clauses.
      4. ‘Was’ can be used as a relative pronoun meaning ‘that' or 'which’ when referring to a whole clause, not a specific noun.
      5. Many famous German figures continue to be influential in today’s world.

      Keywords

      • Relative clause - adds information about the noun in the main clause

      • Relative pronoun - a pronoun that introduces a relative clause, e.g., ‘who’, ‘that’, ‘which’

      Common misconception

Use 'welche' to translate 'which' in a relative clause.

Do not use a question word to translate 'which' when adding information about the noun in the main clause. ‘Was’ can be used as a relative pronoun meaning ‘that' or 'which’ when referring to a whole clause, not a specific noun.

      Teacher tip

Relative pronouns in single-verb subject relative clauses are Foundation tier; ‘wo’ and ‘was’ in subject and object relative clauses are Higher-tier grammar. Extend students' awareness of German celebrities by setting a research homework. Students could write profiles based on the examples in LC2.
