Remembering those who gave their lives in WWI

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can describe how we remember people involved in the conflict, including those from my own community.

      Key learning points

      1. There are many memorial sites around Britain where those who lost their lives in WWI are remembered.
      2. These memorials take many forms but they are most commonly large crosses.
      3. Memorial ceremonies are commonly held at these sites on or near to Remembrance Day.
      4. The 11th November is called 'Remembrance Day' because WWI officially ended at 11am on 11.11.1918.
      5. Poppies are a symbol of remembrance because poppies grew in the fields in which soldiers lost their lives.

      Keywords

      • Memorial - a war memorial is something which has been created to honour those who have lost their lives in conflict

      • Remembrance Day - Remembrance Day is a special day each year, dedicated to all those who lost their lives fighting for their country

      • Poppy - a poppy is type of flower used as a symbol of remembrance for those who died in conflict

      Common misconception

It is only WWI soldiers who are remembered with memorials.

All those who lost their lives in WWI are remembered through memorials (medical staff, civilians, animals etc).

      Teacher tip

Explore the WWI memorial(s) in your local area. There is an opportunity to research local soldiers and see if their names can be found on the memorial(s).
