Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can represent the addition of three addends.

Key learning points

  1. There can be three addends in an addition equation.
  2. We can represent this using a ten frame, a part-part-whole model or as an equation.

Keywords

  • Addends - Any numbers that are added together.

  • Represent - Showing something or standing for something.

Common misconception

Children may struggle to make the connection between the concrete, pictorial and abstract representations.

When using the part–part–whole representation, make sure you explicitly connect each number with what it represents. Ask the children to describe what they can see using the full stem sentences. 'The ___ represents the __________.'

Teacher tip

Introduce abstract representations alongside the concrete and pictorial to support children in making a connection between the representations. Also ensure children are confident reading and writing equations with the equals symbol in different positions.
