Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can generalise and fluently use written division strategies to calculate accurately with decimals.

Key learning points

  1. Divisions can be written as fractions.
  2. Equivalent fractions mean an equivalent calculation can be found.
  3. This equivalent calculation can be significantly easier to calculate.

Keywords

  • Dividend - Dividend is the number we are dividing.

  • Divisor - The divisor is the number by which the dividend is divided.

  • Quotient - The quotient is the integer result of division.

Common misconception

Students try to divide an integer with an integer without simplifying.

Student are required to convert the divisor into an integer. Simplifying the denominator into a single integer digit is preferable.

Teacher tip

Without calculating the answer, pose questions to students or the class to verbalise the integer division with powers of 10 e.g 3.6/5.6 = 36/56
