Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. The plan is the view from above the solid.
  2. The front elevation is the view from the front.
  3. The side elevation is the view from the side.
  4. These can be drawn on normal paper.

Keywords

  • Plan - The plan of a solid is the view of it from above.

  • Front elevation - The front elevation of a solid is the view of it from the front.

  • Side elevation - The side elevation of a solid is the view of it from the side.

Common misconception

The plan and elevations should look exactly the same on squared paper as they do on a solid drawn on isometric paper.

The grid lines on the two types of paper are not the same which is why there is a visual difference. The measurements for each line however have not changed.

This lesson requires pupils to have access to squared paper.
