Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Ratios are often used to describe converting between metric and imperial measurements.
  2. The ratio is either in the simplest form or in unitary form.
  3. 5 miles is roughly 8 kilometers, the approximation is to allow for easy mental calculations.

Keywords

  • Metric unit - Metric units are based around the standard units of metre, gram and litre.

  • Centi- - Centi placed before a unit means 1/100

  • Milli- - Milli placed before a unit means 1/1000

  • Kilo - Kilo placed before a unit means 1000 times.

  • Imperial unit - Imperial is a system of units for measuring, which was created in the early 1800s during the British Empire.

Common misconception

800 cm is further than 80 m because 800 is a larger number than 80.

Each unit of distance (e.g. cm, metre, km) describes a different-sized distance. 1 cm is 1/100 the size of a metre, meaning that 800 cm = 8 m is a shorter distance than 80 m.

It is helpful to focus on breaking down a unit into its prefix and base unit. For example: centimetre → "centi" and "metre". Students then only need to apply the definition of "centi" meaning "1/100". The unit "centimetre" is therefore "1/100 of a metre".
