      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can play a rhythm with a steady pulse.

      4. We can use pictures and words to help us play rhythm compositions accurately, keeping a steady pulse as we play.

      Keywords

      • Rhythm - the pattern of sounds that we play and sing

      • Beat - the playing or showing of the steady pulse, like the ticking of a clock

      • Echo - an exact copy of a musical phrase

      • Composition - a new piece of music that has been created

      Common misconception

Pulse, beat and rhythm are the same thing.

Beat is the playing of the steady pulse. Rhythm is the pattern of sounds and silences of differing durations.

      Teacher tip

Spend plenty of time on activities that help to develop pupils' sense of pulse. For success in composition, the pupils need to be able to recite and play their rhythms to a steady pulse.

      Equipment

Class set of percussion instruments that are easy to play rhythm patterns clearly on e.g. claves / woodblocks. Minibeast compositions from lesson 5.
