Effective practice techniques
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can use effective practice techniques to improve my performance.
Key learning points
- Focused practice is more productive than repeatedly playing through a whole piece.
- Slow practice, looping difficult bars, and working with a metronome help to build accuracy.
- Planning short‑term goals keeps practice time structured.
- A practice plan can help to establish routines and a practice diary can help track progress.
Keywords
Practise - repeating and improving musical skills
Metronome - a device that keeps a steady beat
Routine - a regular practice plan
Accuracy - playing the correct notes and rhythms
Common misconception
Playing the whole piece from the beginning over and over is the best way to practise.
Repeating mistakes can reinforce them. Focused practice on weaker sections is more effective in developing an accurate performance.
Teacher tip
Model effective practice strategies explicitly, demonstrating how to break difficult passages into smaller chunks, reduce the tempo, isolate technical challenges and set specific goals so pupils can see what purposeful practice looks and sounds like.
Equipment
Pupils will need access to their instruments.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
