Running as a team
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can run as part of a team whilst using an effective running technique.
Key learning points
- Move: running fast requires acceleration while using the correct technique; which can be done as part of a team.
- Think: an understanding of the correct technique for running will benefit the team's performance.
- Connect: congratulating and supporting our teammates will develop effective teamwork.
- Feel: self belief enables us to keep trying even when we aren't winning.
Keywords
Team - a group of people who work together to achieve a common goal
Race - a competition to see who is able to run a certain distance in the shortest time
Relay - a race in which each runner completes part of the race
Common misconception
Pupils focus on wanting to go first in their team as opposed to their running technique. Pupils think success is all about winning.
Give each pupil a number and rotate who goes first to avoid the distraction. Challenge pupils to improve their own team's time instead of racing others to reinforce the point.
Teacher tip
If you don't have batons you can use beanbags instead. Rotate the teams pupils work in to develop social skills and ensure teams are mixed.
Equipment
10 relay batons, 30+ cones, 30+ floor markers, 30+ beanbags
