      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use attacking strategies to create space and shooting opportunities in and around the key.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: playing basketball requires speed and stamina to execute attacking play around the key and 3 point line.
      2. Think: movement off the ball helps to get free for a pass or screen to create space for others when attacking.
      3. Feel: remaining in your attacking role will build confidence to control the ball moving through the court as a team.
      4. Connect: effective teamwork requires everyone to take responsibility for their role in attack.

      Keywords

      • 3 second rule - an attacking player does not stay in the key without the ball for longer than 3 seconds

      • Screen - a non-ball handling player stands in the way of a defender to provide space for the player with the ball

      • Pick and roll - after setting a screen, a player moves towards the basket to receive a pass

      • Free throw - a shot taken from behind the free throw line after a foul on the offensive player when shooting

      Common misconception

Pupils think they are not permitted to jump on a free throw.

There is no rule stating a jump is not permitted, however the feet can not pass the free throw line so players chose to keep their feet planted on the ground.

      Teacher tip

The scenarios of this lesson allow pupils to consider how they will work together in attack. It will be beneficial for them to have some time to plan out their movements unopposed.
