Anatomy and physiology: the cardio-respiratory system

Downloads can take a few minutes, especially for larger files or slower connections.

Why this why now

Pupils will already have a basic understanding of how the heart and lungs work to provide oxygen for life and energy for exercise. This unit cements that knowledge from key stage 3 PE and biology before further unpacking the application of complex anatomical and physiological terminology that forms the foundation of any future sports science study and also supports deeper understanding of health, fitness and sporting performance. Combined with previous knowledge about the musculo-skeletal system, pupils are put in a strong position to later understand aerobic and anaerobic exercise.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils can locate the heart and briefly describe its function
  • Pupils are able to locate the lungs and briefly describe their function
  • Pupils understand that oxygen from the atmosphere is inhaled for use by the body to provide energy (for life and exercise)
  • Pupils know how heart rate responds to exercise
  • Pupils know how breathing rate responds to exercise
  • Pupils know that inhale refers to breathing in and exhale refers to breathing out
