Why this why now
Key stage 3 PE and biology will have introduced pupils to some major bones and muscles. This unit cements this knowledge through the application of complex anatomical and physiological terminology. This forms the foundation of future sports science study and supports a deeper understanding of the impact of the musculoskeletal system on health, fitness and sporting performance. Later anatomy and physiology units will develop knowledge from this unit in the examination of other body systems, such as, the cardiovascular system and their application within movement analysis.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils know correct anatomical name and location of some bones (e.g. cranium, ribs, vertebrae, sternum and femur)
- Pupils know correct anatomical name and location of some muscles (e.g. biceps, triceps, abdominals, quadriceps and hamstring)
- Pupils know the name and location of major joints (hip, knee, elbow and shoulder)

Anatomy and physiology: the musculoskeletal system
This unit will examine the structure and function of both the skeletal and the muscular systems. It includes locating major bones and muscles before defining and analysing what movements are possible at different joints.
