Why this why now

Pupils will already know about the relationship between exercise and diet on weight loss or gain. This unit deepens this understanding with a specific focus on nutrition and the importance of avoiding malnutrition. This final unit draws together a lot of what pupils have learnt about body systems, physical training, sporting performance and more general health and well-being to promote active lifestyle choices or post-16 study to learn more.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Know that carbohydrates provide energy required for aerobic exercise
  • Understand the importance of a balanced diet with vitamins and minerals to help maintain health
  • Able to name some example foods and the group they belong to (e.g. meat is a protein, potatoes are carbohydrates, vegetables provide vitamins)
