I can explain why being online too much is bad for me.

      Key learning points

      1. Using digital devices can be fun.
      2. Using digital devices too much can make us sad.
      3. Too much screen time can make us grumpy or angry.
      4. It is important to have time offline.
      5. If our adults tell us to come offline, it is important to listen to them and stop using our devices.

      Keywords

      • Internet - a network connecting digital devices across the world

      • Online - using the internet

      • Digital device - a smartphone, tablet, laptop, computer or smartwatch

      • Screen time - the amount of time that we spend using digital devices

      • Offline - not using the internet

      Common misconception

      Children are online too much.

Although overuse is an increasing problem for young people, we should not assume that all children have too much screen time, some will not have access to the internet for a variety of reasons.

      Teacher tip

Use a jar of sweets as an analogy to show how one or two sweets can be enjoyable, but the whole jar can make us feel unwell. Link this to screen time to discuss the impacts of going online for too long.
