      Why this why now

This unit builds on their Year 1 learning about feeling safe and extends it to understanding the difference between safe surprises and unsafe secrets. Pupils learn that some secrets should never be kept, particularly those involving their body or that make them feel worried or uncomfortable. Pupils develop skills to recognise inappropriate contact and understand that their body belongs to them.

      Prior knowledge requirements

      • Pupils should know that their body belongs to them and that they can say no to unwanted physical contact or touch that makes them uncomfortable.
      • Pupils can identify trusted adults such as parents, carers, teachers and other family members who help to keep them safe.
      • Pupils may understand the correct names for body parts including private parts and know that these parts are private.
