      1. Knowledge of sound-symbol correspondences helps when pronouncing unfamiliar words.
      2. All Spanish nouns are masculine or feminine and the words for 'a/an' and 'the' are 'un, una' and 'el, la'.

      4. Verb endings indicate the person doing the action of the verb and pronouns are often not used.

      Common misconception

      There is one word for 'the' in Spanish as in English.

      'El' is the word for 'the' for masculine nouns; 'la' is the word for 'the' for feminine nouns.

      Teacher tip

      For the final writing task, pupils could write on actual postcards to form a display of their written work in the classroom. Teachers could also explore the possibility of setting up real penfriends with a link Spanish school to create a real context for postcard writing.
