  1. The modal verbs 'querer', 'poder', 'deber' and 'tener que' are followed by an infinitive verb.
  2. It is important to have a good knowledge of sound-symbol correspondences to accurately read aloud in Spanish.

Common misconception

Modal verbs like 'quiero' can be followed with a 1st person singular verb like 'compro'.

Modal verbs like 'quiero' must be followed with an infinitive verb like 'comprar'. For example, 'I want to buy' in Spanish is 'quiero comprar'.
