Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Spanish definite articles are 'el', 'la', 'los' and 'las'. Indefinite articles are 'un', 'una', 'unos' and 'unas'.
      2. Spanish differs from English in its use and non-use of articles in several ways.
      3. Spanish requires the definite article with: general and abstract nouns, days of the week, titles and parts of the body.
      4. Indefinite articles in Spanish can translate as 'a/an', 'one' or 'some'.
      5. Omit the indefinite article when referring to someone's profession in general, but include it when an adjective follows.

      Keywords

      • Definite article - the words 'el', 'la', 'los' and 'las', meaning 'the'

      • Indefinite article - the words 'un', 'una', 'unos' and 'unas', meaning 'one', 'a/an' and 'some'

      Common misconception

The Spanish translation of 'I played football on Monday' is 'jugué al fútbol en lunes'.

Rather then the preposition 'en', Spanish uses the definite article before days of the week. As such, the Spanish translation of 'I played football on Monday' is 'jugué al fútbol el lunes'.
