Key learning points
- Nasal vowel sounds occur when one or more vowels precede a nasal consonant e.g. an, am, ain, on, en.
- The emphatic pronouns 'nous' and 'vous' are used for 'us' and 'you' (plural/formal).
- sans (without), pour (for), avant (before) and chez (at the house/place of) are all followed by emphatic pronouns.
Keywords
Preposition - a word that is used before a noun, a noun phrase, or a pronoun, connecting it to another word
Emphatic pronoun - used to emphasize a person, or when the pronoun stands alone, or after certain prepositions
Common misconception
'Nous' always means 'we' in French.
'Nous' means 'we' when used as a subject pronoun. 'Nous' means 'us' when used as an emphatic pronoun.
On slide 18, listening out for new words in context, listen first before revealing the rest of the slide. The new vocabulary is then animated to appear, followed by the text as a whole.
