Key learning points
- Adjectives often add -e in the feminine form to describe a girl, woman or feminine noun. This is adjective agreement.
- Some adjectives are irregular in the feminine form, e.g. 'beau' (m), 'belle' (f).
- Revisiting vocabulary regularly is important to strengthen one's memory.
Keywords
Adjective agreement - a change in adjective ending, for example, adding an -e to describe a woman, girl or feminine noun
Irregular feminine adjective - an adjective in the feminine form that does not follow the regular pattern: 'beau' (m), 'belle' (f)
Common misconception
Add an 'e' to all adjectives in French, in the feminine form.
Some adjectives in the feminine form are irregular. They do not follow the normal pattern of adding an 'e' to the masculine form. E.g. beau (m) and belle (f).
Cross-curricular activity: art. Make Arcimboldo paintings with your class (a person's face made out of fruit). Pupils could also research the names of their favourite fruits in French to develop their personal repertoire and present their painting to the class.
