Multiply a mixed number by a whole number bridging a whole

I can multiply a mixed number by a whole number where the fractions bridge a whole.

      Lesson details

      Key learning points

      1. Partition the mixed number into a whole number and a fraction.
      2. Multiply the whole number part by the whole number factor.
      3. Multiply the fraction by the whole number using unitising language.
      4. Recombine the partial products to calculate the overall product.

      Keywords

      • Mixed number - A whole number and a fraction can be combined to form a mixed number.

      • Compare - You compare to find out what is the same and what is different. You can compare numbers or expressions to find out if one is greater than or less than another.

      • Partitioning - Partitioning is the act of splitting an object or value into smaller parts.

      Common misconception

Pupils may look to calculate each expression straight away.

Ensure pupils are encouraged to estimate expressions, showing how this can be more efficient particularly when looking to compare expressions. The product is not always needed.

Encourage pupils to continue estimating the product prior to actually calculating. This should also encourage pupils to calculate mentally where they feel they can.
