Key learning points
- The final consonant of a word is often silent in French. We call this SFC for Silent Final Consonant: dans.
- The vowel 'e' is often silent at the end of a word. We call this SFe, Silent Final ‘e’: timide.
- Adjectives change spelling based on the gender of the noun they describe.
- Most adjectives add an 'e' in the feminine form: perdu, perdue. Some adjectives change spelling: sérieux, sérieuse.
- Some adjectives end in an 'e' in both the masculine and feminine forms: calme.
Keywords
SFC - silent final consonant, as in 'dans'
SFe - silent final 'e', as in 'timide'
Feminine form - form of an adjective that describes a girl, woman or feminine noun
Common misconception
Similar to English, you can pronounce the last consonant of a word in French.
The final consonant of a word is often silent in French: le petit chat. The letters c, r, f and l are exceptions to this rule: le sac neuf.
Print out copies of the story or provide parents with the link to practise at home. Pupils could also act out and film the story for assembly to share with the rest of the school. This could be integrated into a computing or drama lesson.
