- Year 3
Subtracting to and from 10
I can subtract to and from 10.
Lesson details
Key learning points
- When the minuend has the same number of ones as the value of the subtrahend, the difference is 10
- Number pairs to 10 allow us to work out the difference from the subtrahend.
Keywords
Minuend - The minuend is the number being subtracted from.
Subtrahend - A subtrahend is a number subtracted from another.
Difference - The difference is the result after subtracting one number from another.
Common misconception
When there's more than one subtrahend, the order cannot be changed.
Subtrahends can be subtracted from the minuend in any order. They can also be added together before being subtracted.
Tens frames and number lines (from 1-20, and some from 20-30) would help pupils represent the problems. Emphasise the learning with the pupils: the difference is a 10 when the subtrahend is the same as the ones digit of the minuend.
